Revolutionary Sherborn

receipt for £144 “old currency toward paing the Soldiers Enlisted in the Contenental Service for three years or During the war.” signed Elisha Barber. Sherborn April 4 1781

It may interest those of you watching the drama of Ken Burns’s The American Revolution unfold to have a few facts about Sherborn’s role in the struggle.

Like so many other towns, Sherborn had its own Committee of Correspondence by 1774. They were concerned with acquiring munitions for the town, raising a company of Minutemen, and extending relief and housing to the besieged families of Boston. Although they arrived too late to do more than harass the retreating enemy at Concord and Lexington, Sherborn men fought in major battles, including Bunker Hill, Ticonderoga and Brandywine. Daniel Whitney, representing the town, voted in favor of ratification of the U.S. Constitution, in February 1788.

These and many more interesting details fill page after page of Sherborn’s history. We are looking forward to the release of Town Historian Betsy Johnson’s definitive history of Sherborn, now expected to be published in early 2026 – watch this space.
