SUMMARY:Adventures In History - Saving What Could Be Lost (HYBRID)
DESCRIPTION:Walter McClennen has written a number of “short histories” on a broad variety of topics pertaining to family\, friends\, community and issues both social and political. His latest book\, Looking East\, is a collection of the best of these short histories selected from his writing of the past twenty years. In this presentation\, Walter shared what he terms “history adventures” based on\, among other things\, the birth of a grandchild\, the purchase of an antique house\, and the discovery of a ribbon-tied packet of letters in a trunk. In Walter’s words\, “Each one is its own tale\, but each is equally important as an example of good ways to approach “saving history” for future generations. He hopes the audience takes away a new enthusiasm for recording the many personal family and local histories that surround all of us.” \nThis is a hybrid program\, in-person in the Community Room and also on Zoom. Please register to receive the Zoom link. \nCosponsored by the Sherborn Library and the Sherborn Historical Society.  \nRegistration Required

SUMMARY:Dallin in our Memory and his Sherborn Sculptures
DESCRIPTION:Sept. 13th program about “Memory” and its sculptor\, Dallin \nWhat do you know about the “Memory” statue?  It is so familiar to those of us who drive by its location in the Town of Sherborn’s Central Burying Ground at the split of Routes 16 and 27.  The statue memorializes the Sherborn residents who died in wars through World War I\, was a gift of William Bradford Homer Dowse and was created by the sculptor Cyrus Dallin (1861-1944).  The Town also received\, as a gift from Dr. Scudder\, a plaster copy of Dallin’s bust of Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes\, Sr.   \nGeri Tremblay and Nancy Blanton\, who are respectively the President and Secretary/Staff Director of Outreach and Engagement of the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum in Arlington\, Massachusetts\, will give a presentation entitled “Dallin in our Memory and his Sherborn Sculptures.” They consider the “Memory” statue to be one of Dallin’s more significant works.  Another copy of the bust of Dr. Holmes is on display at the museum.   \n  \n \nPlease join us for their presentation on Saturday\, September 13th\, 2025 at 1:00 pm in the Community Room on the bottom floor of the Library at 4 Sanger Street or remotely by Zoom.  This event is presented by the Sherborn History Center\, the Sherborn Library and the Sherborn Council on Aging.   The program will be recorded and available later online as a YouTube video.   \nRegistering is necessary to watch via Zoom and is helpful for preparations if attending.  Visit Sherbornlibrary.org\, click “news and events\,” find the calendar’s Sept. 13th date\, and click on “hybrid” or visit sherbornhistoricalsociety.org\, sign up in the box for the e-newsletter\, and check your email the day before the program for an email with a link to the Library’s registration.   \nPeople will be able to see the bust at the program.  If weather permits\, we will gather afterwards at the “Memory” statue for a few more remembrances.
